I can't tell you enough how much I like my 74sv. I have done map updates, but in those situations the updated map could only be used when the microSD card was installed. The Garmin's I have used all cam out of the box with a base map installed. You see how many times I used the word "usually." That means what I'm telling you is not based on my experience with your exact situation. You probably know the 74sv also saves tracks, so if you go exploring the GPS is saving all that for your use later.

You can back them up to your microSD for use in HomePort again as needed. As you use the 74sv your tracks, routes and waypoints will be saved on the 74sv internally. I think it stores up to 5000 waypoints and 100 routes internally. Once that's done, you can load your waypoints to the 74sv from your microSD that you use with HomePort. There's usually an installation/update process that you have to go through for the unit to recognize the maps. I've never started from scratch with a GPS (no base map) but normally the BlueChart G2 maps will remain on a microSD that will have to be plugged in for the GPS to use them. If this unit comes with neither that's one reason it's cheaper. Usually the 74sv comes with some sort of base map installed, either BlueChart G2 coastal or LakevVu. Nothing you are asking is dumb! I'm a newbie to a lot of this too. I'm very familiar with living from hotels, nothing better for thinking about all the stuff you can't do. I'm going to try and go fishing on Saturday morning and try this whole thing out.Īnyway - pardon this long rambling email but if you've ever been stuck in a hotel out of town w/o your boat, you know the feeling.Īny comments, suggestions will be appreciated. These questions might seem dumb but my plan is to fly home on Friday, pick up the GPS, my son, boat and go fishing. Does this data on this Garmin chip load onto the GPS? If yes, what if I'm using Trackback or adding new way points? Where is this data saved (on the Blue chart chip or an internal hard drive)? I'm looking at adding a Gamin BlueCharts (or whatever the maps for my area (South Louisiana bayous). Next question - if I run new routes or add waypoints on my 74 sv will the data be saved on the internal hard drive (if it has one) or will it be store to the microSD? If I plug my microSD chip containing my old data into my 74sv, will this data be saved on the 74sv or will it be necessary to keep the chip in the unit so I have that data? In order words does the 74sv have an internal hard drive to store the data?

GARMIN HOMEPORT ON BOAT GPS HOW TO
I know how to copy my Homeport data to a microSD. I have my old GPS set up so that it plugs into my lapotp with Homeport and my routes, way points are all recorded and backed up. Keep in mind I don't have the new GPS in hand so if my questions seems a bit odd - forgive me. I have a Ram Mount and I'm planning on mounting the GPS on my top handrail on my 1720 CC but if I don't like it up there, I'm going to mount it where Jim has his mounted. West's price was about $275 more than I paid at the GPS store. I don't have my 74sv yet and I'm on the road traveling and I've got a few questions.įirst thing, I went in the local West Marine store in the city where I'm working and looked at a 74sv and it looks like what I need. I took his advice, looked around and decided to order it. He told me to hang up, look at the model on line and see if this is what I wanted. The sales guy didn't try to upsell me and I'd recommend the GPS Store. I told the sales guy my needs and wants and, more importantly, what I didn't want to need.

I then took Jim's advice and called the GPS Store where I spoke to a guy who actually seemed to know what he was talking about (how strange is that) and he suggested I get a Garmin 74 sv. Since I didn't think I'd be hanging radar on the KW1720 nor would I would be wiring my boat for video, quickly repacked the GPS 721 and returned it. The Garmin GPS 721 that I ordered, arrived and I quickly decided that unless I was going to sail the Queen Mary across the ocean, I didn't need most of the features it had.
GARMIN HOMEPORT ON BOAT GPS UPDATE
Well, here is my continuing update on my attempt to upgrade my GPS.
